Rochester Institute of Technology
STUDENT ACCIDENT & SICKNESS INSURANCE PROGRAM
2008-2009 Academic Year
Student Sickness & Accident Insurance (Basic Plan)
-
Am I automatically enrolled in the plan?
No. Enrollment is fully voluntary for all students except certain international students.
You can enroll on-line at www.universityhealthplans.com or by mail.
If you are a registered international student on an A, B, E, F, G, I, J, K, O, Q, R or V visa, RIT automatically enrolls you in the RIT Student Accident & Sickness Insurance plan (Basic Plan) semi-annually based on your registration status. The semi-annual insurance charge will be reflected on your student account.
-
Am I required to have medical insurance?
Yes. RIT requires all students to maintain adequate medical insurance. If you have other medical insurance you do not have to purchase the Student Accident & Sickness Insurance but we encourage you to provide your health insurance information. This will enable the RIT Student Health Center to access the necessary information in case of an emergency if you are unable to provide it yourself or if the Student Health Center needs to refer you to an outside provider.
Consider this...
RIT's plan can supplement deductibles and co-pays of other primary coverage you have, as well as cover treatment received in the Rochester area that would be considered out-of-network for some medical insurance plans.
-
If I don't purchase the RIT insurance coverage, may I still use the services provided by the Student Health Center (SHC)?
Yes. If you do not purchase the RIT Student Accident & Sickness Insurance Basic Plan, the SHC services and programs listed in the brochure are available during the academic year to all students. Full-time undergraduate students are required to pay the quarterly health fee charged automatically to their student account. Part-time, graduate and co-op students may elect to pay the quarterly health fee or use the Student Health Center on a fee-for-service basis.
-
How can I pay for the Accident & Sickness Insurance?
There are three convenient ways to pay. 1.) You can pay on-line at www.universityhealthplans.com using your Mastercard or Visa. 2.) You can mail your check or money order to the plan administrator with the enrollment form. 3.) The premium can be added to your RIT student account (student only – dependent coverage cannot be added to your student account).
-
May I obtain coverage if I am a graduate student or evening division student?
Yes. You are able to voluntarily enroll. You can enroll on-line at www.universityhealthplans.com or by mail.
-
When will my coverage start?
- Students currently enrolled in the Accident & Sickness insurance who re-enroll before Sept. 30, 2008 will have coverage effective Aug. 15, 2008.
- Students not currently enrolled or are enrolling for the first time in the Accident & Sickness insurance who enroll before Sept. 30, 2008 and pay University Health Plans directly will have coverage begin the date the premium is paid or Aug. 15, 2008, whichever is later.
- Students not currently enrolled or are enrolling for the first time in the Accident & Sickness insurance who enroll before Sept. 30, 2008 and add the premium to their RIT student account will have coverage effective Aug. 15, 2008.
-
If I have a family, is the RIT Basic Plan and Optional Enhanced Supplemental Benefit available for my spouse and child(ren)?
Yes. If the student is enrolled in both plans, he/she may enroll a spouse and child(ren) in both plans. Only students and dependents insured for the Student Accident & Sickness Basic Plan may purchase the Enhanced Supplemental Benefit.
-
Are pre-existing conditions covered?
Yes, if you enroll in the RIT Basic Plan within 30 days after the date you become eligible or if you have been covered by other credible coverage prior to the enrollment in the RIT Basic Plan. Please refer to the brochure for further clarification.

Student Excess Accident Insurance
-
How do I submit a claim under this plan?
You may submit a claim for medical expenses related to on-campus accidents or resulting from off-campus activities that are RIT sponsored. This is an excess plan and benefits must first be paid from all other primary medical insurance covering you for this accident. Claim forms are available on-line at www.universityhealthplans.com , at the RIT Student Health Center, and the Risk Management & Insurance web page http://finweb.rit.edu/rmss/forms.html.
Student Dental Plan
-
May I enroll at any time?
Open enrollment is available at the beginning of each quarter, closed after 30 days. This plan is by voluntary enrollment only.
-
Is coverage available for my spouse and child(ren)?
Yes. If the RIT student is enrolling in the Dental Plan, he/she may enroll a spouse and child(ren) at the same time by completing the application form and indicating dependent coverage is desired. Excellus BlueCross BlueShield will bill you for the premium for the family coverage you indicate.
Student Personal Property Insurance
-
Why do I need student personal property insurance?
RIT insurance does not cover loss to student personal property. Student Personal Property insurance provides the student with primary, affordable worldwide coverage for personal property such as computers, clothes, cameras, bikes and electronic equipment with replacement cost valuation. Many students purchase coverage to supplement coverage provided them under a family homeowner's plan.
RIT strongly encourages all students to maintain insurance coverage for their personal possessions while attending school. RIT assumes no responsibility for losses of students' personal belongings.
RIT is pleased to offer the Student Personal Property Insurance program through CSI. The CSI Student Personal Property Protector Plus® is underwritten by Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company and offers several different limit and deductible options, providing you greater flexibility to select the type and amount of coverage that best serves your needs.
The plans are available through:
CSI Insurance Agency, Inc.
