2009-2010 Academic Year

Dear Student or Parent:

Academic year 2009-2010 will be the twenty-first year of implementation of the Massachusetts Mandatory Health Insurance Law. Under this law, each college must require all students carrying nine credits or more in all divisions, to participate in the student health insurance program or in a health insurance program with comparable coverage.

Students of Bunker Hill Community College will be insured by Nationwide Life Insurance Company's Injury and Sickness Insurance Policy with benefits as described in the enclosed Benefits summary. Complete brochures will be mailed upon enrollment. If you have comparable coverage you may wish to waive participation in the Massachusetts Community College Insurance Plan. Students who wish to waive coverage must log onto www.universityhealthplans.com and complete the waiver form.  Please note that the following cannot be used to waive the insurance: Students enrolled in Commonwealth Care, Students enrolled in Mass Health and are dependents of their parent/parents. Students enrolled in free care at a hospital, Students with an insurance policy of a foreign/overseas carrier, Travel or Accident Insurance.

The premium charge for the Massachusetts Community College Health Insurance Plan appears on your bill. All on-Line waivers must be completed at registration time, or by the due date of the bill. Payment will be required in order to retain your registration and attend classes. If you do not have access to a computer with internet access, computers are available in the main lobby at the Charlestown campus, in the center for self directed learning, in the computer labs, in the library and at other locations throughout the campus.

International Students – "Coverage by insurance carriers outside the U.S. and coverage by foreign National Health Service programs are deemed not to be comparable to coverage under a qualifying student health insurance program. All international students must participate in the Qualifying Student Health Insurance Program."114.6 CMR 3.04 (3) (c), unless comparable coverage meeting state requirements is obtained from a carrier in the United States.

The premium appearing on your bill is $823.00 for Annual enrollment in the Fall, which is for the period of September 1, 2009 through August 31, 2010, and $564.00 for the Spring enrollment, which is the period of January 1, 2010 through August 31, 2010. Please note that the premiums will not be prorated if you withdraw before the end of the semester, attend classes for Fall only, obtain additional coverage, or if you feel that you no longer require the coverage.

You will receive an ID card from University Health Plans once you have enrolled in the Student Accident and Sickness Insurance Plan.

Delta Dental – A voluntary dental insurance program insured by Delta Dental is also available. To access additional information and to enroll in the dental plan log onto www.universityhealthplans.com click on Massachusetts Community Colleges then your campus and select the dental option.

INSTRUCTIONS TO WAIVE THE STUDENT HEALTH INSURANCE

If you have comparable coverage from a domestic insurance company with claims paid in the United States, you are eligible to waive the mandatory Student Accident and Sickness Insurance plan upon registration.

Please follow these instructions to waive the student coverage on line.

  1. Go to www.universityhealthplans.com.

  2. Click on Massachusetts Community Colleges.

  2. Click on Waive Health Ins/University Health Plans (under the Financial Profile section)
  1. Click on Bunker Hill Community College.

  2. Click on the Bunker Hill Community College Student Accident & Sickness Insurance Plan.

  3. Click on Waiver Form under Menu (top left).

  4. Fill in all required information - if a piece of required information is missing, your waiver will NOT be accepted.

  5. Submit the waiver form. Shortly thereafter, you will receive a response indicating whether your waiver has been successfully submitted or not. If the waiver has not been submitted, fill it out again and resubmit. If it still not accepted, contact University Health Plans via e-mail (click on icon at bottom of web page) or at 1-800-437-6448.

  6. Please print a copy of the confirmation of your waiver for your records and check your bill to see if the waiver credit has been applied to your account. If it is not applied to your account, please contact University Health Plans at 1-800-437-6448. You may check your account on line via BHCC Online Services at http://onlineservices.bhcc.mass.edu/. Students with no social security number, or those with questions about obtaining a PIN or questions about accessing the online services, should call 617- 228- 3441

Please note that the following cannot be used to waive the insurance:

  • Students enrolled in Commonwealth Care.
  • Students enrolled in Mass Health and are dependents of their parent/parents.
  • Students enrolled in free care at a hospital.
  • Students with an insurance policy of a foreign/overseas carrier.
  • Travel or Accident Insurance.

PLEASE NOTE: All International students are required to have health insurance coverage from a U.S. based provider or pay for the Student Health Insurance Plan charged to your account. This requirement is authorized under the insurance laws for higher education students in Massachusetts (section 275 of chapter 151 of the acts of 1996). Please note that travel and accident insurance are not acceptable as health insurance and cannot be used to waive coverage.
