STUDENT HEALTH INSURANCE PLAN

Postdoctoral Fellows
2018-2019 Academic Year

Dear Students and Parents/Guardians:

Expenses for medical and psychological services beyond those provided on campus, including referrals by the campus services, are the personal responsibility of the student. This is the case even if the expense results from University-sponsored programs such as physical education, field or clinical experiences, and intramural or recreational activities. Such expenses can affect a student’s ability to continue his/her education. Therefore, the importance of having some form of insurance cannot be overemphasized.

STUDENT HEALTH INSURANCE PLAN

The 2018-2019 Student Health Insurance Plan (UD Plan) is underwritten by Highmark BlueCross BlueShield of Delaware. This plan provides substantial benefits for Covered Medical Expenses at a reasonable cost. A complete description of benefits can be found under "Benefit Information" on the left side of this page.

We urge you to evaluate the UD Plan, not only based upon the absence of other insurance coverage but as an important Delaware medical community-based supplement to existing insurance coverage. Although many students are adequately covered when in the area of their home by their parents’ plans, similar coverage in another area or state cannot be assumed. If you/your student are/is currently covered by an insurance plan, please have a discussion with your insurance provider regarding differences in your benefits or covered services when in the Newark, Delaware, area.

Mandatory Students

The following students will be required to either purchase the UD Plan or complete an online Waiver Form. These students are categorized as “Mandatory Students”:

  • Undergraduate students registered for 12+ credits;
  • Contracted graduate students (including sustaining);
  • Non-contracted graduate students registered for 9+ credits; and
  • Registered international students on F1, J1 and J2 visas.

Fall Semester Mandatory Students who have other comparable coverage and do not want to purchase the UD Plan need to submit an online Annual Waiver Form by September 15, 2018. Students who are not categorized as “Mandatory” in Fall 2018 but are categorized as such in Spring 2019, have other comparable coverage, and do not want to purchase the UD Plan, need to submit an online Spring Waiver Form by February 28, 2019. Click here to read the requirements for comparable coverage.

Eligible students who would like to be enrolled should submit an online Mandatory Student Enrollment Form to expedite the processing of their enrollment. Students who enroll in the UD Plan may also purchase coverage for their eligible dependents by submitting the Dependent Enrollment Form. Dependent premiums must be made in full with a credit card online or with a check or money order by mail. Please refer to the 2018-2019 paper enrollment form for details on deadlines and premium amounts.

Voluntary Students

As of the 2018-2019 policy year, the following matriculated students are no longer eligible for the UD Student Health Insurance Plan.

  • Domestic and non-F1/J1/J2 undergraduates taking less than 12 credits;
  • Domestic and non-F1/J1/J2 non-contracted graduate students taking less than 9 credits; and
  • Domestic and non-F1/J1/J2 non-contracted graduate students with sustaining status.

An exception may be granted for a student to remain enrolled for one semester if the student was enrolled in the UD Plan as a Mandatory student during the immediately preceding semester. Please call University Health Plans at 800-437-6448 for questions regarding eligibility and enrollment instructions.
