Assumption University
STUDENT HEALTH INSURANCE PLAN

2023-2024 Academic Year
UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS

The Spring 2024 waiver/enrollment deadline was January 22, 2024. Only ABSN students who are newly eligible for Summer 2024 may waive the Student Health Insurance Plan at this time. The ABSN Summer 2024 waiver/enrollment deadline is June 7, 2024.

Eligibility

All students enrolled at least three-quarter time are required by Massachusetts State law to enroll in the Student Health Insurance or be covered by a health insurance plan with comparable coverage. To ensure compliance with the Massachusetts State Law, all returning and new full-time and three-quarter-time students are automatically billed for the Student Health Insurance Plan. Plan Highlights

The 2023-2024 Assumption University Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) is provided by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts. The plan is ACA-compliant and includes access to Blue Cross Blue Shield's national PPO network of providers. Students do not have to select a primary care physician and referrals are not required.

Assumption University has partnered with University Health Plans to administer the plan and help with waiver, enrollment, or benefit-related questions. University Health Plans can be reached at 833-251-1744 or info@univhealthplans.com

Enrollment Process

Students are encouraged to complete the enrollment form located in the navigation menu on the left-hand side of this page. Although students are automatically charged for the SHIP, students will not be automatically enrolled by Assumption until after the deadline date.  Students should enroll as soon as possible to avoid difficulties in accessing their health insurance benefits.

Assumption University Health Insurance Requirements

To ensure students have health insurance, all students are initially charged on their student account for the SHIP. Students with other existing comparable coverage must submit an online waiver form prior to the waiver deadline. The following are the minimum benefits your plan must provide:

  • Must be filed and approved in the United States and fully compliant with the Affordable Care Act (ACA) benefit regulations
  • Unlimited policy maximum for essential health benefits
  • Coverage for inpatient and outpatient medical care in Massachusetts, specifically the campus area
  • Mental health benefits which include chemical and substance abuse treatment
  • Preventative care services which include, but are not limited to, annual physicals, gynecological exams, routine screenings, and immunizations
  • Coverage for pre-existing conditions
  • Prescription drugs with no maximum dollar limit
  • A network of providers and pharmacies in the campus area. The plan must pay medical providers directly for inpatient and outpatient care. The plan must not be a reimbursement plan

Domestic Student Waiver Process

If you are covered by a comprehensive health insurance plan that meets all the above waiver requirements you can opt out of the Assumption University SHIP by completing the waiver form, located in the navigation menu on the left-hand side of this page. Before waiving, compare the cost, coverage, and benefits of the SHIP to your existing plan. Consider the following:

  • Out-of-state Medicaid and many out-of-state HMO or EPO plans do not provide out-of-network coverage. Urgent and/or emergency-only coverage does not meet the insurance requirements.   Please call your health insurance company and confirm that your plan provides emergency and non-emergency care in Massachusetts. Some out of State plans may offer an “away from home care” or “out of area” rider that can be added to your plan to provide coverage in Massachusetts while attending Assumption University. The SHIP includes a nationwide PPO providing access to a nationwide network of providers with coverage for in-network and out-of-network providers. The provider search is in the left-hand side navigation menu.
  • With the rising costs of healthcare, we encourage students to compare all other insurance options before enrolling. The Massachusetts Health Connector offers information for Massachusetts residents about the online marketplace where you can compare and purchase insurance plans. You may be eligible for a Subsidized Health Plan (a low-or-no-cost insurance program for qualifying uninsured adults). MassHealth Limited, Children’s Medical Security Plan, and Health Safety Net are plans through MassHealth that do not meet the waiver requirements.

International Students

International students insured by a US-filed and approved, ACA-compliant health insurance plan that meets the above insurance requirements can opt out of the SHIP by completing the waiver form, located in the left-hand side navigation menu. International insurance plans, travel insurance, and short-term limited-duration plans do not meet the requirements and are not accepted.

Please note that health insurance plans marketed solely to international students typically do not meet the Massachusetts Student Health Plan regulation. ISO, PSI, Student Medicover (United), PGH Global (United), DIANins, GBG Insurance, HDL Global Specialty, Tata AIG, Gouda Travel Insurance, Allianz, AXA Assistance, IMGlobal, Cigna Global, Tokio Marine, Tigerless, AON Insurance, and NYIS Insurance are examples of popular companies that do not meet the waiver requirements. These plans have limited benefits and/or coverage periods that do not comply with the Massachusetts Student Health Plan Regulations and can make substantial changes to the benefits because they are not regulated by the Affordable Care Act.

Qualifying Event Enrollment Process

Students who waived the SHIP may qualify for special enrollment rights if they incur an involuntary loss of other coverage. To request the enrollment form and premium quote, please contact University Health Plans at  info@univhealthplans.com

To enroll, you must submit an enrollment form, a letter from your prior insurance company documenting your loss of coverage, and payment within 60 days of the qualifying event. If all items are received by the deadline coverage will be effective as of the first day without coverage under your prior plan.

If you have any questions about the online waiver/enrollment process or about the Student Health Plan, please contact University Health Plans at 833-251-1744.

Spring Termination Process

Due to the Massachusetts Student Health Insurance Plan Regulation, Assumption University is required to allow students to terminate their SHIP mid-academic year if the student is newly eligible for a Massachusetts Subsidized Health Plan or MassHealth prior to the start of the Spring Term (before 1/1/24) or if a student will no longer be attending the University in the Spring Term. To request the Spring Termination Request form, please contact University Health Plans at 833-251-1744 or info@univhealthplans.com by January 31, 2024.

Sincerely,
