St. John's University
STUDENT HEALTH INSURANCE PLAN

2023-2024 Academic Year

Each year St. John's University engages in a comprehensive benefit review and premium negotiation process for the Student Health Insurance Plan. The primary goal is to provide students with a cost-effective health insurance program with quality benefits. After much review and analysis, the plan will move to a new carrier, Aetna, for the 2023-2024 policy year.

Benefit changes effective August 15, 2023:

  • The member coinsurance will change to 15% in-network and 35% out-of-network.

Comprehensive plan documents will be available once they are approved by the NY insurance department.

ELIGIBILITY

All registered undergraduate and graduate students are eligible to enroll in the Student Health Insurance Plan.

Resident Domestic Students - eligible domestic students living on campus are automatically enrolled in the plan unless they can provide evidence of equivalent coverage satisfactory to St. John’s University.

International Students - Enrollment is mandatory for all international students with a current passport and student Visa (J-1 or F-1) who are temporarily located outside their home country and are actively engaged in education or educational research activities at St. John’s University. All eligible international students are automatically enrolled in the University’s Student Health Insurance Plan based on their registration status each semester, and may not submit an online waiver. International students covered by a U.S. health insurance plan that meets all of the waiver requirements may contact University Health Plans at 833-251-1134 or info@univhealthplans.com to request an International Student Waiver Form. (see additional waiver information below)

Non-Resident Domestic Students - eligible domestic students living off campus will not be assessed the insurance charge on their student account. These students are eligible to enroll voluntarily on-line by submitting the voluntary enrollment form in the navigation menu on the left hand side of this page.

Internet classes and television (TV) courses may not fulfill the eligibility requirements that the covered student actively attends classes. Students taking only on-line classes are not eligible for school insurance.

Student Health Insurance Policy Period, Fee and Deadlines:

  Coverage Period Insurance Fee*
Waiver/Enrollment Deadline
 Annual  08/15/23 - 08/14/24 $3,628  09/13/2023

WAIVER PROCESS

Domestic resident students beginning classes in fall semester must complete the on-line waiver form on the left side of this page by the fall deadline. New students beginning classes in spring semester must complete the on-line waiver form by the spring deadline. Failure to complete the waiver form by the appropriate deadline will result in the student’s mandatory purchase of the University’s Student Health Insurance Plan for the 2023-2024 policy year. Waivers will not be accepted after the deadline.

Before waiving, compare the cost, coverage, and benefits of the SHIP to your existing plan. Please consider the following:

  1. Your plan must provide access to doctors, specialists, hospitals, labs, pharmacies, and behavioral health providers in the St. John’s University campus area.
  2. The policy must be a US health insurance plan that is filed and approved in the US and ACA (Affordable Care Act) compliant.

  3. Out-of-state Medicaid and many out-of-state HMO or EPO plans do not provide out-of-network coverage. Urgent and/or emergency-only coverage does not provide comprehensive coverage in the area of the University.

All eligible international students (see above) are automatically enrolled in the University’s Student Health Insurance Plan based on their registration status each semester, and may not submit an online waiver. Please contact University Health Plans at 833-251-1134 or info@univhealthplans.com if you are covered by a U.S. health insurance plan that meets all of the waiver requirements to request the International Student Waiver Form.

Please note, health insurance plans marketed solely to international students are often not filed and approved in the U.S., have limited benefits and/or coverage periods that do not comply with the St. John’ University waiver requirements. ISO, HDL Global Specialty, Tata AIG, Student Medicover, PSI, and GBG Insurance are examples of companies that do not meet the waiver requirements.

ENROLLMENT PROCESS

Resident Domestic Students - eligible resident domestic students living on campus who fail to complete the on-line waiver form by the deadline date listed above are automatically charged for and enrolled in the plan unless they submit a waiver form.

International Students - Enrollment is mandatory for all international students with a current passport and student Visa (J-1 or F-1) who are temporarily located outside their home country and are actively engaged in education or educational research activities at St. John’s University. These students are automatically enrolled in the University’s Student Health Insurance Plan. (see waiver process for additional information)

Non-Resident Domestic Students - eligible domestic students living off campus may enroll voluntarily online by submitting the “Enrollment Form” found in the navigation menu on the left hand side of this page by the posted deadline. Please note: spring enrollment is for new spring students only. No enrollment will be accepted after the deadline.

Re-enrollment after waiving: If you have a life changing event (i.e. involuntary loss of coverage) and need to enroll in the insurance plan after waiving, please contact University Health Plans at 1-833-251-1134 or info@univhealthplans.com. Enrollment must occur within 30 days of the qualifying life event.
