2020-2021 Student Health Insurance Plan

United Healthcare Student Resources will be the new insurance company providing coverage for the Stevens Institute of Technology Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) 2020-2021. The plan is ACA compliant and includes access to United Healthcare's national network of PPO providers. Students do not have to select a primary care physician and referrals are not required. Stevens Institute of Technology has partnered with University Health Plans (UHP) to administer the plan and help with  the waiver, enrollment, or general benefit-related questions.

Annual Student Health Insurance Policy Period and Premiums:

  • Policy Period: August 18, 2020 to August 17, 2021
  • Graduate Waiver and Enrollment Deadline: September 15, 2020
  • Student Premium: $2,125

Spring Transfer/New Admits Student Health Insurance Policy Period and Premiums:

  • Policy Period: January 1, 2021 to August 17, 2021
  • Graduate Waiver and Enrollment Deadline: February 9, 2021
  • Student Premium: $1,333

Stevens requires that all graduate students enrolled in 9 or more credits, as well as International students and Doctoral students enrolled in Maintenance of Full Time status course have health insurance. The Stevens Student Health Insurance Plan gives students access where their family's insurance plan may have restrictions on coverage. Before waiving the Stevens Health Insurance Plan, students should check with their family insurance company to ensure they will have comparable access to medical care in the Hoboken area and that their insurance plan meets the following requirements:

  • The policy must be a US health insurance plan that is filed and approved in the US
  • The policy must provide coverage for the entire academic year (8/18/20-8/17/21) with no break in coverage. Travel insurance and short-term limited duration plans are not accepted
  • The policy must be in full compliance with the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and provide minimum essential coverage as defined by the ACA including:
    • The policy must provide an unlimited policy maximum
    • The policy cannot have a pre-existing condition limitation
    • The policy must provide emergency and non-emergency local coverage
    • The policy must provide an unlimited maximum for mental/behavioral health care for inpatient and outpatient services

Students with comparable insurance coverage must complete the waiver form online via the UHP website. No paper forms will be accepted. Students will be able to print out a confirmation and will also receive an email confirmation from UHP.

Part-time students are not automatically enrolled in the Stevens Student Health Insurance Plan, but are eligible to enroll directly with UHP. Students should submit the online enrollment form to expedite the processing of their enrollment. Coverage is also available for spouse and children of students and for J-Visa Holders/Exchange Visitors and their dependents. Rates for voluntary participants and enrollment information for dependents can be found on the UHP website

In addition to the health insurance program, Stevens is pleased to offer our students and their dependents a Dental Insurance Plan (DeltaCare) and VSP Vision Care Plan.  Students may enroll in these plans on a voluntary basis.
