Effective 9/1/2026, the dental plan carrier will switch to Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts.

Dear Massachusetts Students,

University Health Plans is pleased to offer students attending colleges and universities in Massachusetts an option to enroll in the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts Dental Blue Freedom Plan. Enrollment in this plan is VOLUNTARY; it is not required insurance. 

Students and dependents who wish to enroll in this plan MUST submit the online enrollment form and pay the full premium amount online via credit card no later than midnight on the posted deadline for their selected coverage period. 

As with any insurance plan, please be sure to review the Summary of Benefits before enrolling in the dental plan. The benefits listed are subject to change.

If you are not a student at a college or university in Massachusetts, you are not eligible to enroll in this Plan. Go back to the home page and search your school to see if they offer a voluntary dental plan.

Enrollment will be processed AFTER the deadline. Once processed, coverage will be effective September 1, 2026.

POLICY PERIOD, COST AND DEADLINES

PARTICIPATING PROVIDERS

In-Network: Dental Blue Freedom offers a large nationwide network of participating dentists. Dental Blue Freedom members can choose from the Dental Blue PPO (Preferred Dentist) or Dental Blue (Participating Dentist) networks to minimize out-of-pocket expenses. Dental Blue PPO dentists will have a lower rates than Dental Blue. You are not required to select a primary care dentist in network.

To locate an in-network provider, use the "Provider Search" link in the navigation menu on the left side of this page under "BCBSMA Dental Blue Freedom".

Out-of-Network:The Dental Blue Freedom Plan provides coverage for services received from dentists who don’t participate in either the Dental Blue PPO or Dental Blue networks. Benefits are reduced by 20 percent when services are received from an out-of-network dentist.

BENEFIT INFORMATION

As with any insurance plan, be sure to review the Summary of Benefits BEFORE enrolling. The benefits are subject to change. The most up-to-date Summary of Benefits can be found on this page at any time during the policy year. 

Benefit Period: The Dental Blue Freedom Plan runs on a benefit period of 9/1-8/31. The $1,000 plan year maximum and deductible will renew every September regardless of the coverage period you have enrolled in.
