National Guardian Life COVID-19 Coverage Updates:

  • Coronavirus testing: NGL will cover COVID-19 testing (including ER, telemedicine, urgent care and office visits) similar to a preventive benefit for fully insured plans, waiving co-pays, deductibles and co-insurance for customers when treated by in-network or out of network providers.
  • Coronavirus treatment: Covered based on the specific plan benefits.
  • Coronavirus immunization: Not yet available

The University of Bridgeport is pleased to announce that National Guardian Life Insurance Company will underwrite and pay the claims for the 2019-2020 Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP). The plan includes Cigna's national Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) network of doctors. University Health Plans (UHP) will manage the enrollment and waiver process and is available to answer any questions about the SHIP. The University of Bridgeport requires all full-time undergraduate students, international students, physician assistant students and all students living in campus housing to be covered by a health insurance plan. All students required to have insurance are automatically enrolled in and billed for the University of Bridgeport Student Health Insurance Plan. 

The Plan offers a Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) and has been designed for the University of Bridgeport students, offering comprehensive health insurance coverage with an emphasis on wellness including annual physicals, women’s wellness, and immunizations. International Student Process

International students are automatically enrolled in the Student Health Insurance Plan and do not have access to the online waiver form. International students who have a US health insurance plan that is comparable to the University of Bridgeport Student Health Insurance Plan and meets all visa insurance requirements should contact University Health Plans at 800-437-6448 or 

Waiving Coverage

The deadline to waive the annual Student Health Insurance Plan is September 15th, 2019. If a waiver form is not submitted, then the student will be automatically enrolled in and billed for the Student Health Insurance Plan. Students who waive coverage in the fall do not have to waive again until the next academic year 

Only newly enrolled Spring or Summer students will be enrolled in the spring or summer. The deadline for newly enrolled Spring students to waive is February 15, 2020. The deadline for NEW Summer students to waive is the first day of class

If a waiver form is not submitted by the deadline, then the student will be automatically enrolled in and billed for the Student Health Insurance Plan.

If you are currently insured, you may waive enrollment. However, please note the following:

  • Not all plans provide comprehensive coverage in Connecticut such as out-of-state Medicaid plans, and certain HMOs and managed care plans. Be sure to check with your insurance company before waiving.
  • If your comparable plan will end before July 31, 2020, while you are in school, you must either enroll in the Student Health Insurance Plan within 31 days of your other plan’s end date or find comparable coverage elsewhere.

Voluntary Enrollment

Part-time undergraduate students taking 7 or more credits and graduate students taking 6 or more credits and not living on campus are eligible to voluntarily enroll in the Student Health Insurance Plan. Note, Distance Learning Students taking online-only classes are not eligible for the SHIP. To enroll click on the “Part-time, Non-Res Graduate Student Enrollment Form” in the navigation menu. The deadline to enroll for the fall is September 15, 2019, and the deadline to enroll as a NEW spring student is February 15, 2020. Dependents are not eligible for the 2019-2020 SHIP.

If you are enrolling in the insurance, then you must actively attend classes for at least the first 31 days after the effective date of the plan.
