STUDENT HEALTH INSURANCE PLAN

Spring Waiver Form
2024-2025 Academic Year

To be considered comparable, your plan must be filed and approved in the US and be compliant with the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and provide comprehensive, non-emergency benefits for doctors, specialists, hospitals, labs, pharmacies, and behavioral health providers in the geographical area surrounding the school.

Important things to consider:

  • Generally, only plans acquired through U.S. employment or purchased from the local state marketplaces will be filed and approved in the U.S. and compliant with the ACA. Plans that do not meet the above requirement include short-term medical plans, healthcare sharing plans, insurance plans from foreign healthcare systems, travel plans, and plans marketed to international students only. Examples of plans marketed to international students that do not meet the requirements include GBG Insurance, HDL Global Specialty, ISO, Tigerless, PGH (United), PSI, Student Medicover, and Tata AIG.
  • Not all U.S. health plans provide national coverage, and many out-of-state HMO, EPO, and Medicaid plans will not provide comprehensive non-emergency benefits outside of the home coverage area. Emergency-only coverage near the campus does not meet the waiver requirements.

    • Students covered by out-of-state HMO or EPO plans should contact their insurance company and apply for an away-from-home rider if available. Many insurance companies offer these riders for students studying away from home. If you have an HMO or EPO plan that does not include NC in the comprehensive coverage network, and you do not have an away-from-home rider extending your coverage to NC, you cannot waive.

    • Students insured by Medicaid from states other than NC cannot waive with their out-of-state Medicaid plans.

    • Students insured by Medicaid from NC should ensure their managed care network includes providers near the school.
