Stevens Institute of Technology
STUDENT HEALTH INSURANCE PLAN

2023-2024 Academic Year

Stevens, based on recommendation from the President’s Task Force on Mental Health is expanding student access to mental health through Stevens’ counseling staff, leveraging technology, increasing student access to local off-campus providers, and overcoming barriers imposed by limited insurance coverage. Stevens is committed to each student having access to health insurance that provides access to mental health treatment. In order to achieve these goals, Stevens is requiring all undergraduate students, international students, and full-time graduate students to enroll in the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) or be covered by a comprehensive Affordable Care Act (ACA) compliant health insurance plan. To ensure compliance, full-time students are automatically billed for the SHIP.

Plan Highlights

The Stevens 2023-24 SHIP insured by Aetna, is ACA compliant and includes access to Aetna’s national PPO network of providers. Stevens chose Aetna for this year’s coverage due to lower premiums and the PPO network which includes better mental health access in the Hoboken/Jersey City area. Students do not have to select a primary care provider and referrals are not required.

Stevens has partnered with University Health Plans (UHP) to administer the plan waiver, enrollment, and benefit-related questions. Information about the plan is available on the website www.universityhealthplans.com/Stevens. Customer service is available at info@univhealthplans.com or 833-250-9006.

Once enrolled, insurance ID cards are available to download through the link on the left menu section at www.universityhealthplans.com/Stevens. Click on the link and follow the instructions. ID cards will be available 3-5 business days after enrollment is confirmed.

Waiver Process

If you are covered by a comprehensive ACA compliant health insurance plan you can opt-out of the SHIP by completing the waiver form, located in the left-hand side navigation menu at www.universityhealthplans.com/stevens. Before waiving compare the cost, coverage, and benefits of the SHIP to your existing plan. Please consider the following:

  • The plan must provide access to doctors, specialists, behavioral health care providers, hospitals, labs, and pharmacies in the Stevens campus area.
  • The plan must be a U.S. health insurance plan that is filed and approved in the U.S. and compliant with the Affordable Care Act (ACA) benefit requirements. Travel insurance and short-term limited duration plans are not accepted.
  • Out-of-state Medicaid and many out-of-state HMO or EPO plans do not provide out-of-network coverage. Urgent and/or emergency-only coverage does not meet the insurance requirements.

If you do not submit a waiver form by the waiver deadline date above, you will be enrolled in SHIP and responsible for the premium.

Enrollment Process for Domestic Students

Students that need coverage should confirm their enrollment in the SHIP by completing the enrollment form located in the left-hand side navigation menu. In order to activate coverage on the policy start date of August 18, 2023, you need to complete the online enrollment process. Part-time graduates enroll directly with UHP, and the form is available in the navigation menu.

International Students

Stevens is requiring all international students to be insured with an ACA compliant, filed, and approved policy in the U.S. All international students in the United States will be automatically enrolled in the Student Health Insurance Plan and do not need to take any action. Please note, health insurance plans marketed solely to international students are often not filed and approved in the U.S., have limited benefits, provider networks and/or coverage periods that do not comply with the Stevens insurance requirements. GBG Insurance, HDL Global Specialty, ISO, PGH (United), PSI, Student Medicover, and Tata AIG are examples of companies that do not meet the waiver requirements. Please contact University Health Plans at 833-250-9006 or info@univhealthplans.com if you are covered by a U.S. health insurance plan that meets all of the waiver requirements to request the International Student Waiver Form.
