STUDENT HEALTH INSURANCE PLAN
2026-2027 Academic Year
UMass Chan Medical School is committed to promoting good health and meeting the health care needs of our students. A health insurance plan is critical in providing peace of mind, knowing that students can receive the services they need in the event of a sickness or injury.
Massachusetts Law mandates that every student who is enrolled in a certificate, diploma, or degree-granting program carry adequate medical insurance to help cover the extra expenses of medical treatments. The UMass Chan Medical School Student Health Insurance Plan provides coverage to students for a 12 month period, September 1, 2026 to August 31, 2027. The start date may be earlier for the first year students. We urge you to consider enrolling in this plan because it is designed to be an affordable option. Students do not need to select a primary care provider or get referrals from a primary care provider to see a specialist.
With the rising costs of healthcare and increase in utilization of the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP), UMass Chan Medical School is offering a high-deductible plan ($2,000) and a low-deductible plan ($500) plan for the 2026-2027 academic year to help keep the insurance premium and the plan a viable option for all students. These two plans are based on a replication of the 2025-2026 plan design with three key differences below:

A deductible is the specific amount of money you pay out-of-pocket for covered services during the plan year before your insurance plan begins to pay.
We encourage students anticipating high out-of-pocket costs to compare other insurance options to the SHIP. The Massachusetts Health Connector offers information about their online insurance marketplace where you can compare and purchase insurance plans. You may be eligible for a Subsidized Health Plan (a low or no cost insurance program for qualifying uninsured adults).
