Simmons University
STUDENT HEALTH INSURANCE PLAN

2022-2023 Academic Year

Simmons University is pleased to announce that we have teamed up with Blue Cross and Blue Shield to provide health insurance coverage for our students. Please review the 2022-2023 Summary of Benefits carefully.

All students taking 9 or more credits are required by Massachusetts State law to enroll in the Student Health Insurance or be covered by a health insurance plan with comparable coverage. To ensure compliance with Massachusetts law Simmons University students are automatically enrolled in and billed for the Student Health Plan, which is separate from the Health Center fee. To read the details on this law, click here. Students are not allowed to waive coverage with a Health Safety Net Plan.

Although all students are automatically enrolled in the plan each year unless they file a waiver, qualified applicants who are eligible to enroll in the plan are encouraged to fill out an enrollment form online. The enrollment form will confirm that you want the Student Health Insurance, and result in you receiving an insurance card sooner than through the automatic enrollment process. The Student Health Insurance is effective August 15, 2022 through August 14, 2023. The annual premium for an undergraduate student is $5,071 and the annual premium for a graduate student is $8,371. For new incoming spring students the Student Health Insurance is effective January 1, 2023 through August 14, 2023. The spring premium for an undergraduate student is $3,177 and the spring premium for a graduate student is $5,230.

Students registered for fewer than 9 academic credits are not eligible for the student health insurance. If you enroll in the student health insurance, but drop below the 9 credit threshold within 60 days of 8/15/2022, you will lose coverage. If as a new Spring student you enroll in the student health insurance, but drop below the 9 credit threshold within 60 days of 1/1/2023, you will lose coverage. Students enrolled in online only classes are not eligible for the student health insurance.

If you have a comparable health insurance plan, you may waive the student coverage by clicking on the waiver form below. You will need to have your health insurance information readily available before proceeding. Upon confirmation of a properly completed waiver, the charge for medical insurance will be reversed on your student account. If you lose coverage during the academic year, then you are obligated to obtain other comparable coverage or enroll in the Student Health Insurance Plan within 60 days.

Please take into consideration that the benefits that are available under the Student Health Insurance may be secondary to or in excess of the benefits provided by any other plan(s). The benefits provided by this Student Health Insurance may be reduced by the benefits provided by those plan(s). Additional information can be found in the subscriber certificate under the coordination of benefits section.

The deadline to enroll in or waive the Annual Student Health Insurance Plan for the 2022-2023 academic year is September 15, 2022.

The deadline to enroll in or waive the Spring Student Health Insurance Plan for the 2022-2023 academic year is January 15, 2023.
