You can access important information about the plan by selecting “Benefit Information” in the navigation menu on the left-hand side of this page.

Plan Change for 2024-2025: Co-insurance will be removed from the ambulance benefit. The out-of-pocket maximum will increase from $6,350 to $7,500, the ER copay will increase from $100 to $200, and the co-insurance for tier 3 and tier 4 prescription drugs for tier 3 and tier 4 will increase from 20% co-insurance to 30% co-insurance. Teledoc behavioral health will be included in the plan at no member cost share.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT PROCESS

International students are automatically enrolled in the Student Health Insurance Plan and do not need to take any action to enroll. International students with comparable US-based health insurance policies filed and approved in the US and Compliant with the Affordable Care Act (ACA) may submit a waiver form. The waiver form will be reviewed before being approved or denied.

DOMESTIC STUDENT ENROLLMENT AND WAIVER PROCESS

Enrollment and waiver forms are located to the left in the navigation menu.  Mandatory students referenced above who do not complete an enrollment or waiver form by the deadline will be automatically enrolled in the student health insurance plan.

WAIVER REQUIREMENTS

If a student is currently insured under another insurance policy comparable to the RWU Student Health Insurance Plan and does not wish to have coverage under the University-sponsored plan, the student may waive the insurance by completing the waiver form by the deadline.  You must review your current insurance policy to confirm it meets the following criteria:

  • Your plan must be ACA-compliant, filed, and approved in the US
  • Your plan must provide insured benefits for doctors, hospitals, labs, pharmacies, and behavioral health providers near the Roger Williams Campus
  • Services must be accessible in Rhode Island near the Roger Williams Campus.

The following plans do not meet the waiver requirements:

  • Plans that provide emergency-only coverage near the Roger Williams Campus in RI.  Many out-of-state HMO, EPO, and Medicaid Plans do not provide comprehensive coverage in Rhode Island.
  • Plans from insurance carriers outside the US and coverage by Foreign National Health Service Programs. Plans marketed solely to international students are often not filed and approved in the U.S., or compliant with the ACA, and do not meet the insurance requirements. GBG Insurance, HDL Global Specialty, ISO, Tigerless, PGH (United), PSI, Student Medicover, and Tata AIG are examples of companies that do not meet the waiver requirements.

If your comparable plan will end before August 13, 2024, while you are in school, you must either enroll in the Student Health Insurance Plan within 31 days of your other plan’s end date or provide comparable coverage elsewhere.

Students will be asked to provide details about their current insurance plans during the waiver process.

ACCESS THE ENROLLMENT OR WAIVER FORM

To waive or enroll, click on the appropriate link, either “Waiver Form” or “Enrollment Form,” in the navigation menu to the left, complete all required information, and click submit. Confirming enrollment before the deadline ensures your information is transferred to the insurance company on time.

Waiver Confirmation:  Once you have completed the waiver process, an e-mail will automatically be generated and sent to your student RWU e-mail address.  It will confirm that you submitted a waiver, and if you did so in error, to contact University Health Plans.  Please print and keep this confirmation for your reference.
