STUDENT HEALTH INSURANCE PLAN

2018-2019 Academic Year

Roger Williams University and Roger Williams University School of Law (collectively, the “University”) have partnered with University Health Plans, Inc. to service the University’s 2018 -2019 Student Health Insurance Plan. The Student Health Insurance Plan is underwritten by National Guardian Life and claims are paid by Consolidated Health Plans (“CHP”).

The annual premium for coverage effective August 14, 2018 – August 13, 2019 is $2,011.

The plan offers a Preferred Provider Organization (“PPO”) and has been customized to meet the needs of University students with an emphasis on wellness. In addition to the reduced cost, the following enhancements have been added to the plan:

  • Cigna is the PPO network provider
  • The deductible has been lowered to $250 in-network and $500 out-of-network
  • The co-insurance has been removed from all office visits; office visits are subject to a $15 copay
  • Mental health office visits are covered like any other physician office visit with a $15 copay

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT PROCESS

International students are automatically enrolled in the Student Health Insurance Plan and do not need to take any action to enroll. International students who have an Embassy Sponsored Insurance Program should contact the Intercultural Center to waive coverage. International students with comparable US-based health insurance, contact University Health Plans at 800-437-6448 or info@univhealthplans.com to discuss waiver options.

ENROLLMENT AND WAIVER PROCESS

The following students are required to confirm enrollment or waive coverage for the 2018 -2019 academic year by the August 15, 2018 deadlineThe waiver form has closed. The Petition to Waive deadline is September 5, 2018.

  • Full-time Undergraduate Students (residential & commuter)
  • Master in Architecture Students
  • School of Law Students (JD & MSL)

Enrollment and waivers forms are located in the navigation menu to the left. Students referenced above who do not complete an enrollment or waiver form by August 15, 2018 will be automatically enrolled in the student health insurance plan.

WAIVER REQUIREMENTS

If a student is currently insured under another insurance policy that is comparable to the RWU Student Health Insurance Plan and does not wish to have coverage under the University sponsored plan, the student may waive out of the insurance by completing the Petition to Waive form by September 5, 2018.  It is important you review your current insurance policy to confirm it meets the following criteria:

  • Your plan must provide access to in network, doctors, hospitals, labs, pharmacies and behavioral health providers in Rhode Island. Emergency only coverage is not sufficient.
  • Your plan must be filed in the US and compliant with the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Essential Health Benefit requirements

Please note: Not all plans provide comprehensive coverage in Rhode Island such as certain HMO and EPO plans and out-of-state Medicaid plans.

If your comparable plan will end before August 13, 2019, while you are in school, you must either enroll in the Student Health Insurance Plan within 31 days of your other plan’s end date or provide comparable coverage elsewhere.

Students will be asked to provide details about their current insurance plan during the waiver process. The deadline to submit a Petition to Waive Form is September 5, 2018.

ACCESS THE ENROLLMENT OR WAIVER FORM

To waive or enroll, click on the appropriate link, either “Waiver Form” or “Enrollment Form,” in the navigation menu to the left, complete all required information and click submit. The deadline to waive or enroll is August 15, 2018. Confirming enrollment prior to the deadline ensures that your information is transferred to the insurance company in a timely manner.

Waiver Confirmation:  Once you have completed the waiver process, an e-mail automatically will be generated and sent to your student RWU e-mail address.  It will confirm that you submitted a waiver and if you did so in error to contact University Health Plans.  Please print and keep this confirmation for your reference.

Waiver processed, but the charge is still on the tuition bill?   Please allow 5-7 business days for your waiver to be processed. If you still are not seeing the credit, Undergraduate and Graduate Students should contact the Bursar’s Office at (401) 254-3520, and Law Students should contact the Office of Student Finance and Records at (401)254-4657.

VOLUNTARY ENROLLMENT IN THE STUDENT HEALTH INSURANCE PLAN

Full-time Graduate Students (Non-Master in Architecture or Law) with 6 + credits are encouraged to, but not required to enroll in the student health insurance plan. The deadline to complete a voluntary enrollment in the student health insurance plan is August 15, 2018.  

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FOR NEW STUDENTS

New students enrolling at the University for the 2018-19 spring term will be able to access the waiver form once you have received your RWU Student ID, which is included in a separate mailing after your deposit has been received.
