STUDENT HEALTH INSURANCE PLAN

2017-2018 Policy Year

Roger Williams University and Roger Williams University School of Law (collectively, the “University”) have partnered with University Health Plans, Inc. to service the University’s 2017 -2018 Student Health Insurance Plan.  The Student Health Insurance Plan is underwritten by National Guardian Life and claims are paid by Consolidated Health Plans (“CHP”). The plan offers a Preferred Provider Organization (“PPO”) and has been customized to meet the needs of University students with an emphasis on wellness. The annual premium for coverage effective August 14, 2017 – August 13, 2018 is: $2,332

International Student Process

International students are automatically enrolled in the Student Health Insurance Plan and do not need to take any action to enroll. International students who have an Embassy Sponsored Insurance Program should contact the Intercultural Center to waive coverage. International students with comparable US-based health insurance, contact University Health Plans at 800-437-6448 or info@univhealthplans.com to discuss waiver options.

Enrollment and Waiver Process

The following students are required to actively confirm enrollment or waive coverage for the 2017 -2018 academic year by the August 15, 2017 deadline.

  • Full-time Undergraduate Students (residential & commuter)
  • Master’s in Architecture Students
  • All School of Law Students (JD & MSL)

Students referenced above who do not complete an enrollment or waiver form by August 15, 2017 automatically will be enrolled in the student health insurance plan.

If a student is currently insured under another insurance policy and does not wish to have coverage under the University sponsored plan, the student may waive out of the insurance by completing the online waiver form by August 15, 2017.  Please note the following:

  • Not all plans provide comprehensive coverage in Rhode Island such as out-of-state Medicaid plans and certain HMOs and managed care plans. Be sure to check with your insurance company before waiving.
  • If your comparable plan will end before August 13, 2018, while you are in school, you must either enroll in the Student Health Insurance Plan within 31 days of your other plan’s end date or provide comparable coverage elsewhere.

Students will be asked to provide details about their current insurance plan during the waiver process. The deadline to waive coverage is August 15, 2017.

Access the online Enrollment or Waiver Form

To waive or enroll, click on the appropriate link, either “Waiver Form” or “Enrollment Form,” in the navigation menu to the left, complete all required information and click submit. The deadline to waive or enroll is August 15, 2017. Confirming enrollment prior to the deadline ensures that your information is transferred to the insurance company in a timely manner.

Waiver Confirmation:  Once you have completed the waiver process, an e-mail automatically will be generated and sent to your student RWU e-mail address.  It will confirm that you submitted a waiver and if you did so in error to contact University Health Plans.  Please print and keep this confirmation for your reference.

Waiver processed, but the charge is still on the tuition bill?   Please allow 5-7 business days for your waiver to be processed. If you still are not seeing the credit, Undergraduate and Graduate Students should contact the Bursar’s Office at (401) 254-3520, and Law Students should contact the Office of Student Finance and Records at (401)254-4657.

Voluntary Enrollment in the Student Health Insurance Plan

Full-time Graduate Students (Non-Master’s in Architecture or Law) with 6 + credits are encouraged to, but not required to enroll in the student health insurance plan. The deadline to complete a voluntary enrollment in the student health insurance plan is August 15, 2017.  

Additional Information for New Students

New students enrolling at the University for the 2017-18 academic year will be able to access the waiver form once you have received your RWU Student ID, which is included in a separate mailing after your deposit has been received.
