Roger Williams University

2020-2021 Policy Year

Roger Williams University and Roger Williams University School of Law (collectively, the “University”) have partnered with University Health Plans, a division of Risk Strategies to service the University’s 2020 -2021 Student Health Insurance Plan. The Student Health Insurance Plan is insured by Wellfleet.

  • The annual premium for coverage effective August 14, 2020 – August 13, 2021, is $2,012.
  • The spring law student premium for coverage effective January 11, 2021 - August 13, 2021, is $1,185
  • The spring undergraduate/graduate premium for coverage January 21, 2021 - August 13, 2021, is $1,130.

The plan includes Cigna's Preferred Provider Organization (“PPO”) and has been customized to meet the needs of University students with an emphasis on wellness. You can access important information about the plan by selecting “Benefit Information” in the navigation menu on the left-hand side of this page.

International students are automatically enrolled in the Student Health Insurance Plan and do not need to take any action to enroll. International students who have an Embassy Sponsored Insurance Program should contact the Intercultural Center to waive coverage. International students with comparable US-based health insurance, contact University Health Plans at 800-437-6448 or to discuss waiver options.

Only new spring students, students newly eligible for the insurance plan for the spring semester, and students who submitted a fall-only waiver form at the start of the academic are required to submit a waiver or enrollment form. The following students are required to confirm enrollment or waive coverage for the 2020 -2021 academic year by February 1, 2021.

  • Full-time Undergraduate Students (residential & commuter)
  • School of Law Students (JD & MSL)

Enrollment and waiver forms are located in the navigation menu to the left. Students referenced above who do not complete an enrollment or waiver form by the deadline will be automatically enrolled in the student health insurance plan.

If a student is currently insured under another insurance policy that is comparable to the RWU Student Health Insurance Plan and does not wish to have coverage under the University-sponsored plan, the student may waive out of the insurance by completing the waiver form by the deadline.  It is important you review your current insurance policy to confirm it meets the following criteria:

  • Your plan must be ACA compliant.
  • Your plan must provide insured benefits for doctors, hospitals, labs, pharmacies, and behavioral health providers in Rhode Island.
  • Services must be accessible in Rhode Island near the Roger Williams Campus.

The following plans do not meet the waiver requirements:

  • Plans that provide emergency-only coverage in Rhode Island. Many out of state HMO, EPO, and Medicaid Plans do not provide comprehensive coverage in Rhode Island.
  • Plans from insurance carriers outside the US and coverage by Foreign National Health Service Programs.

If your comparable plan will end before August 13, 2021, while you are in school, you must either enroll in the Student Health Insurance Plan within 31 days of your other plan’s end date or provide comparable coverage elsewhere.

Special COVID Provision: Students who are approved to study remotely are not required to have insurance in Rhode Island if their plan provides comprehensive coverage in the location in which they will study remotely.

Students will be asked to provide details about their current insurance plan during the waiver process. The deadline to submit a waiver form is February 1, 2021.

To waive or enroll, click on the appropriate link, either “Waiver Form” or “Enrollment Form,” in the navigation menu to the left, complete all required information, and click submit. The deadline for students to waive or enroll is February 1, 2021. Confirming enrollment prior to the deadline ensures that your information is transferred to the insurance company in a timely manner.

Waiver Confirmation:  Once you have completed the waiver process, an e-mail automatically will be generated and sent to your student RWU e-mail address.  It will confirm that you submitted a waiver and if you did so in error to contact University Health Plans.  Please print and keep this confirmation for your reference.

Waiver processed, but the charge is still on the tuition bill?   Please allow 5-7 business days for your waiver to be processed. If you still are not seeing the credit, Undergraduate and Graduate Students should contact the Bursar’s Office at (401) 254-3520, and Law Students should contact the Office of Student Finance and Records at (401)254-4657.

Please contact University Health Plans at 800-437-6448 or with questions about the enrollment or waiver process.

Full-time Graduate Students with 6 + credits are encouraged to, but not required to enroll in the student health insurance plan. The deadline to complete a voluntary enrollment in the student health insurance plan is February 1, 2021.

New students enrolling at the university for the 2020-21academic year will be able to access the waiver form once you have received your RWU Student ID, which is included in a separate mailing after your deposit has been received.
