Eligibility
All students enrolled at least three-quarter time and taking at least one in-person course are required by Massachusetts state law to enroll in the Student Health Insurance Plan or maintain comparable health insurance coverage. The general threshold for three-quarter-time enrollment is 9 credits for undergraduate students and 7 credits for graduate students, with some exceptions.
To comply with this requirement, Simmons University students are automatically enrolled in and billed for the Student Health Insurance Plan, which is separate from the Health Center fee. Students are not permitted to waive coverage with a Health Safety Net Plan. To learn more about this law, click here.
Students enrolled less than three-quarter time are not eligible for the Student Health Insurance Plan. If a student enrolls in SHIP but drops below the three-quarter-time threshold within 60 days of August 15, 2026, coverage will be terminated. For new spring students, coverage will be terminated if enrollment drops below the threshold within 60 days of January 1, 2027. Students enrolled in online-only courses are not eligible for SHIP.

Enrollment Process
Although students are automatically charged for SHIP, they are not enrolled until after the waiver/enrollment deadline. Students who need coverage should submit the enrollment form as soon as possible to avoid delays in accessing their benefits.
Waiver Process
If you have comparable health insurance coverage, you may waive student coverage by completing the waiver form. Please have your insurance information available before proceeding. Once your waiver is approved, the insurance charge will be removed from your student account. If you lose coverage during the academic year, you must obtain comparable coverage or enroll in SHIP within 60 days.
The deadline to enroll in or waive the annual Student Health Insurance Plan for the 2026–2027 academic year is October 15, 2026.
The deadline to enroll in or waive the spring Student Health Insurance Plan for the 2026–2027 academic year is February 12, 2027.
