Wake Forest University School of Medicine
STUDENT HEALTH INSURANCE PLAN

2023-2024 Academic Year

Plan Highlights

Each year Wake Forest University School of Medicine (WFUSM) engages in a comprehensive benefit review and premium negotiation process for the Student Health Insurance Plan. The primary goal is to provide students with a cost-effective health insurance program with quality benefits. After much review and analysis, the plan will move to a new carrier, Aetna, for the 2023-2024 policy year.

The new plan will include the following benefit changes:

  • Lab/X-ray benefit – the $30 per service copayment will no longer apply. Lab/x-ray services will be subject to the plan’s deductible and co-insurance.
  • Urgent Care – the $75 copay will no longer apply. Urgent care services will be subject to the plan’s deductible and co-insurance.
  • The out-of-pocket maximum will increase to $9,100 in-in-network and $18,200 out-of-network.
  • The plan will include an adult vision exam.
Comprehensive plan documents will be available once they are approved by the NC insurance department.

Insurance Requirement

Wake Forest University School of Medicine (WFUSM) requires that all students have health insurance. WFSM has made arrangements for students and their families to purchase insurance at group rates. Students required to have health insurance will be enrolled in and charged for the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP). The annual insurance cost will be split into two charges. Students may opt-out of the SHIP by submitting a waiver form documenting proof of comparable coverage at the start of the academic year. Once the waiver deadline has passed, students cannot opt-out of the insurance plan.

Before opting out of the student health insurance plan, please check your individual plan to confirm their participation in the local area. View this list of common plans accepted by Wake Forest Baptist. Due to the different physician groups and hospitals within the Wake Forest Baptist system, physician services and hospital services are billed separately. Please remember that health insurance coverage varies, so some services may not be covered.
