Assumption University
STUDENT HEALTH INSURANCE PLAN
2026-2027 Academic Year
Eligibility
All students enrolled at least three-quarter time are required by Massachusetts state law to enroll in the Student Health Insurance Plan or maintain comparable health insurance coverage. To comply with this requirement, all new and returning full-time and three-quarter-time students are automatically billed for the Student Health Insurance Plan. Plan Highlights
The 2026–2027 Assumption University Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) is provided by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts. The plan is ACA-compliant and includes access to Blue Cross Blue Shield’s national PPO network of providers. Students are not required to select a primary care physician, and referrals are not needed.
Assumption University has partnered with University Health Plans to administer the plan and assist with waiver, enrollment, and benefit-related questions. University Health Plans can be reached at 833-251-1744 or info@univhealthplans.com.

Enrollment Process
Although students are automatically charged for SHIP, they are not enrolled until after the deadline. Students are encouraged to complete the enrollment form located in the navigation menu as soon as possible to avoid delays in accessing their health insurance benefits.
Assumption University Health Insurance Requirements
To ensure students have health insurance, all students are initially charged for the SHIP on their student accounts. Students with other existing comparable coverage must submit an online waiver form before the waiver deadline. The following is a list of what needs to be included in your other health insurance plan to be considered comparable to the Assumption University SHIP and meet the health insurance requirement.
- The policy must be filed and approved in the United States and fully compliant with the Affordable Care Act (ACA) benefit regulations
- The policy must have an unlimited policy maximum for Essential Health Benefits and must provide access to doctors, specialists, hospitals, labs/imaging, pharmacies, and mental health/behavioral health providers in Massachusetts, specifically the Assumption campus area.
- The plan must pay medical providers directly for inpatient and outpatient care. The plan must not be a reimbursement plan.
- The plan must not be an international insurance plan, travel insurance, short-term limited-duration plans, or health sharing plan.
Domestic Student Waiver Process
If you are covered by a comprehensive health insurance plan that meets all waiver requirements, you may opt out of the Assumption University SHIP by completing the waiver form located in the navigation menu. Before submitting a waiver, compare the cost, coverage, and benefits of SHIP with your existing plan. Consider the following:
- Out-of-state Medicaid and many out-of-state HMO or EPO plans do not provide out-of-network coverage. Urgent and/or emergency-only coverage does not meet the insurance requirements. Please call your health insurance company and confirm that your plan provides emergency and non-emergency care in Massachusetts. Some out-of-state plans may offer an “away from home care” or “out of area” rider that can be added to your plan to provide coverage in Massachusetts while attending Assumption University. The SHIP provides access to the nationwide network of Blue Cross PPO providers.
-
Before signing up for the Assumption University Student Health Insurance Plan, make sure you've reviewed all your health insurance options. You may be able to get coverage through the Massachusetts Health Connector, often at low or no cost, depending on income and residency. These options may save you money or better meet your needs. Please note that MassHealth Limited, Children’s Medical Security Plan, and Health Safety Net are MassHealth plans that do not meet the waiver requirements. Free, confidential help is available through the Health Care for All Helpline to compare plans and enroll in a plan through the Massachusetts Health Connector or MassHealth.
Please note that if you waive the Assumption SHIP by June 30, 2026, the insurance charge will not be added to your tuition statement. Students who do not submit a waiver or enrollment form by this date will be charged for SHIP. Waiver forms may still be submitted after June 30, 2026; however, charges may already appear on your account.
International Students
International students insured by a health insurance plan that meets the above requirements can opt out of the SHIP by completing the waiver form in the navigation menu. International insurance plans, travel insurance, and short-term limited-duration plans do not meet the requirements and are not accepted.
Please note that health insurance plans marketed solely to international students typically do not meet the Massachusetts Student Health Plan regulation. ISO, PSI, Student Medicover (United), PGH Global (United), DIANins, GBG Insurance, HDL Global Specialty, Tata AIG, Gouda Travel Insurance, Allianz, AXA Assistance, IMGlobal, Cigna Global, Tokio Marine, Tigerless, AON Insurance, and NYIS Insurance are examples of popular companies that do not meet the waiver requirements. These plans have limited benefits and/or coverage periods that do not comply with the Massachusetts Student Health Plan Regulations, and can make substantial changes to benefits because they are not regulated by the Affordable Care Act.
Qualifying Event Enrollment Process
Students who waived the SHIP may qualify for special enrollment rights if they incur an involuntary loss of other coverage. The Qualifying Event Enrollment Form can be found in the navigation menu. To request a premium quote, contact University Health Plans at info@univhealthplans.com.
To enroll, you must submit an enrollment form, a letter from your prior insurance company documenting your loss of coverage, and payment within 60 days of the qualifying event. If all items are received by the deadline, coverage will be effective as of the first day without coverage under your prior plan.
Spring Termination Process
Due to Massachusetts Student Health Insurance Plan regulations, Assumption University must allow students to terminate SHIP mid-academic year if they become newly eligible for a subsidized Massachusetts Health Connector Plan or MassHealth before the start of the spring term (January 14, 2027), or if they will no longer be attending the University in the spring term. To request a Spring Termination Request Form, please contact University Health Plans at 833-251-1744 or info@univhealthplans.com by January 31, 2027.
