Assumption University
STUDENT HEALTH INSURANCE PLAN

2026-2027 Academic Year

Eligibility

All students enrolled at least three-quarter time are required by Massachusetts State law to enroll in the Student Health Insurance or be covered by a health insurance plan with comparable coverage. To ensure compliance with the Massachusetts State Law, all returning and new full-time and three-quarter-time students are automatically billed for the Student Health Insurance Plan. Plan Highlights

The 2026-2027 Assumption University Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) is provided by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts. The plan is ACA-compliant and includes access to Blue Cross Blue Shield's national PPO network of providers. Students do not have to select a primary care physician, and referrals are not required.

Assumption University has partnered with University Health Plans to administer the plan and help with waiver, enrollment, or benefit-related questions. University Health Plans can be reached at 833-251-1744 or info@univhealthplans.com

Enrollment Process

Students are encouraged to complete the enrollment form located in the navigation menu. Although students are automatically charged for the SHIP, they will not be automatically enrolled by Assumption until after the deadline date.  Students should enroll as soon as possible to avoid difficulties in accessing their health insurance benefits.

Assumption University Health Insurance Requirements

To ensure students have health insurance, all students are initially charged for the SHIP on their student accounts. Students with other existing comparable coverage must submit an online waiver form before the waiver deadline. The following is a list of what needs to be included in your other health insurance plan to be considered comparable to the Assumption University SHIP and meet the health insurance requirement.

  • The policy must be filed and approved in the United States and fully compliant with the Affordable Care Act (ACA) benefit regulations
  • The policy must have an unlimited policy maximum for Essential Health Benefits and must provide access to doctors, specialists, hospitals, labs/imaging, pharmacies, and mental health/behavioral health providers in Massachusetts, specifically the Assumption campus area.
  • The plan must pay medical providers directly for inpatient and outpatient care. The plan must not be a reimbursement plan.
  • The plan must not be an international insurance plan, travel insurance, short-term limited-duration plans, or health sharing plan.

Domestic Student Waiver Process

If you are covered by a comprehensive health insurance plan that meets all the above waiver requirements, you can opt out of the Assumption University SHIP by completing the waiver form, located in the navigation menu. Before waiving, compare the cost, coverage, and benefits of the SHIP to your existing plan. Consider the following:

  • Out-of-state Medicaid and many out-of-state HMO or EPO plans do not provide out-of-network coverage. Urgent and/or emergency-only coverage does not meet the insurance requirements.   Please call your health insurance company and confirm that your plan provides emergency and non-emergency care in Massachusetts. Some out-of-state plans may offer an “away from home care” or “out of area” rider that can be added to your plan to provide coverage in Massachusetts while attending Assumption University. The SHIP provides access to the nationwide network of Blue Cross PPO providers.
  • With the rising costs of healthcare, we encourage students to compare all other insurance options before enrolling. You may be able to get coverage through the Massachusetts Health Connector, often at low or no cost, depending on income and residency. These options may save you money or better meet your needs. MassHealth Limited, Children’s Medical Security Plan, and Health Safety Net are MassHealth plans that do not meet the waiver requirements.

Please note that if you are waiving the Assumption SHIP, you will be able to avoid the insurance charge on your tuition statement by submitting your waiver by June 30, 2026. After June 30, 2026, students who have not submitted a waiver or enrollment form will be charged for the SHIP. Students can still submit their waiver forms after June 30th to waive their medical insurance fee.

International Students

International students insured by a health insurance plan that meets the above requirements can opt out of the SHIP by completing the waiver form in the navigation menu. International insurance plans, travel insurance, and short-term limited-duration plans do not meet the requirements and are not accepted.

Please note that health insurance plans marketed solely to international students typically do not meet the Massachusetts Student Health Plan regulation. ISO, PSI, Student Medicover (United), PGH Global (United), DIANins, GBG Insurance, HDL Global Specialty, Tata AIG, Gouda Travel Insurance, Allianz, AXA Assistance, IMGlobal, Cigna Global, Tokio Marine, Tigerless, AON Insurance, and NYIS Insurance are examples of popular companies that do not meet the waiver requirements. These plans have limited benefits and/or coverage periods that do not comply with the Massachusetts Student Health Plan Regulations, and can make substantial changes to benefits because they are not regulated by the Affordable Care Act.

Qualifying Event Enrollment Process

Students who waived the SHIP may qualify for special enrollment rights if they experience an involuntary loss of other coverage. To request the premium quote, please contact University Health Plans at info@univhealthplans.com.

To enroll, you must submit the Qualifying Event Enrollment Form and include a letter from your prior insurance company documenting your loss of coverage within 60 days of the qualifying event.

Spring Termination Process

Due to the Massachusetts Student Health Insurance Plan Regulation, Assumption University is required to allow students to terminate their SHIP mid-academic year if the student is newly eligible for a Massachusetts Subsidized Health Plan or MassHealth before the start of the Spring Term (before 1/14/27) or if a student will no longer be attending the University in the Spring Term. To request the Spring Termination Request form, please contact University Health Plans at 833-251-1744 or info@univhealthplans.com by January 31, 2027.
