STUDENT HEALTH INSURANCE PLAN
2026-2027 Policy Year
Principia College (Principia) requires all degree-seeking students to be covered by a health insurance plan that provides comprehensive coverage in the Elsah, Illinois area. To ensure adequate coverage, all degree-seeking domestic students are automatically enrolled in and charged for the Principia Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP).
Please note, International students and online only students are NOT eligible for this policy.
Students with a comprehensive health insurance plan, providing them coverage in the Elsah, Illinois area, may request a waiver form if they do not wish to be enrolled in the Principia SHIP.
Plan Highlights
For students who do not have a comprehensive health insurance plan or full coverage while on campus, Principia has contracted with United HealthCare Student Resources to be the insurance provider. The Plan offers a Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) through United HealthCare and has been designed for Principia students, offering comprehensive health insurance coverage. Details about the Student Health Insurance Plan can be found by selecting “Benefit Information”* in the navigation menu on the left-hand side of this page.
Principia has partnered with University Health Plans to administer the plan and help with waiver, enrollment, or benefit-related questions. Enrollment Cost and Coverage Periods
All domestic students are automatically enrolled in and billed for the Principia Student Health Insurance Plan unless a waiver form is submitted and approved. Please reference the chart below for coverage periods and cost.

Benefit documents for 26-27 school year are pending state approval and will be added to the Benefit Information tab when available.
Please note, Insurance ID Cards are not mailed but are available electroncially using the Insurance ID Card Link located on the left-hand side of this page. You will need to create an account with United HealthCare Student Resources to access the digital ID Card.
Waiver Information & Insurance Requirements
All domestic students with a comparable health insurance plan that meets the waiver requirements listed below may waive enrollment in the Principia Student Health Insurance Plan. Not all insurance plans provide comprehensive coverage in the state of Illinois. Before submitting a waiver, we strongly encourage you to check with your insurance provider to confirm coverage in the Elsah, IL area.
If your plan will end before August 9, 2027 or while you are in school, you must either enroll in the Student Health Insurance Plan within 31 days of your other plan’s end date, or find acceptable coverage elsewhere. You must always be sufficiently insured while considered a student at Principia.
To waive the SHIP, your insurance plan must meet the following requirements:
- Provides access to doctors, specialists, hospitals, labs/imaging, pharmacies, and mental health/behavioral health providers in the Principia College campus area without restriction or limitation for both non-emergent and emergency coverage.
- US-filed and approved, ACA (Affordable Care Act) compliant.
- Provides coverage for all Essential Health Benefits defined by the ACA.
The following plans do not meet waiver requirements:
- Kaiser Permanente, Indemnity, and Health Share plans.
- International insurance plans, travel insurance, and short-term/limited-duration plans.
- Out of state Medicaid (exception of IL and MS Medicaid), HMO, or EPO plans.
- Urgent and emergency-only coverage.
If your plan is from another state, it may offer a Home Away Rider to provide coverage in Illinois, while at Principia. Please check with your plan if you do not have coverage in the Elsah, IL area to review if this option is available to you.
How to Waive the Plan:
- Click on the "Waiver Form” link in the left-hand navigation menu on this page.
- Complete all required information on the form, upload your insurance ID Card, and click sumbit.
- Watch for a confirmation email approving your waiver.
Please note, all submitted waivers will be audited and will not be processed until your receive a second email confirming the waiver was approved. If a waiver form is not successfully submitted or cannot be approved, then you will remain enrolled and charged for the Student Health Insurance Plan.
If your waiver is NOT approved, you will need to provide additional documentation showing you have full coverage in the Elsah, IL area, prior to the deadline, or you will remain enrolled in the plan. If requested documentation of coverage is not submitted prior to the deadline then you will remain enrolled in and billed for the Principia Student Health Insurance Plan.
Waivers are not accepted after the final deadline.
Qualifying Event Enrollment Process
Students who waived the plan may qualify for special enrollment rights if they incur an involuntary loss of other coverage. The Qualifying Event Enrollment Form can be found in the navigation menu on the left-hand side of this page. To enroll, you must submit an enrollment form, a letter from your prior insurance company documenting your loss of coverage, and payment within 31 days of the qualifying event. If all items are received by the deadline coverage will be effective as of the first day without coverage under your prior plan.
