Rowan University
STUDENT HEALTH INSURANCE PLAN
2025-2026 Academic Year
Health Insurance Requirement
Rowan University requires all full-time students — and part-time students enrolled in specific programs (see list provided ) — to maintain health insurance coverage throughout the academic year. This requirement helps protect students from unexpected medical expenses and ensures access to quality healthcare, whether they are on campus or traveling abroad.
Each academic year, Rowan University automatically enrolls eligible students in the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP). Students who already have comparable health insurance coverage—either through their own plan or through a parent or guardian—may submit a waiver request to opt out of SHIP.
Under University policy, the following students are required to maintain health insurance coverage:
- All full-time matriculated students and certification students enrolled in:
- 12 or more credits for undergraduates, or
- 9 or more credits for graduates.
- All full-time Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine (SOM) students, all full-time Postdoctoral Fellow Students, and part-time Rowan-Virtua SOM students who participate in clinical experience as part of their educational programs.
- All full-time medical students and any student enrolled in a Cooper Medical School of Rowan University (CMSRU)-approved alternate program of study.
- All full-time Shreiver School of Veterinary Medicine (SSVM) students enrolled in one or more credits.

Plan Highlights
The Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) is provided through Aetna Student Health. The plan is ACA-compliant and gives students access to Aetna's nationwide PPO network of healthcare providers. Students are not required to select a primary care physician, and referrals are not needed to see specialists. Detailed information about plan coverage is available in the Plan Design and Benefits Summary, which can be found under Benefit Information in the left-hand navigation menu.
Rowan University has partnered with University Health Plans to administer the plan and help with waiver, enrollment, or benefit-related questions. University Health Plans can be reached at 833-251-1143 or info@univhealthplans.com.
Waiver Criteria and Instructions
To waive (opt out of) the Rowan University Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP), all domestic students and all full-time matriculated international students with an F-1 visa must have and agree to maintain health insurance that meets the following requirements:
- The plan must be underwritten by a US-based insurance company.
- The plan must be compliant with the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
- The plan must provide both inpatient and outpatient coverage in the Southern New Jersey Region.
As an alternative, full-time matriculated international students on an F-1 visa satisfy the requirement by enrolling in one of the international student insurance plans offered here. Travel or catastrophic insurance will not be accepted.
To waive the Rowan University insurance coverage, click on the waiver form link in the left-hand navigation menu.
Early Termination (Not Permitted)
Rowan University and Aetna Student Health DO NOT prorate health insurance premiums or adjust coverage effective dates. Once enrolled, students will remain covered under the SHIP for the full policy period, even if they graduate, withdraw from the University, or obtain new insurance after the waiver deadline. Coverage will continue through the end of the policy term without exception.
Qualifying Event
Students who waive the health insurance in the fall semester are not eligible to enroll in the SHIP for the spring semester. Enrollment after waiving is permitted only if the student experiences a Qualifying Life Event that results in the loss of other health insurance coverage. Please email info@univhealthplans.com to access the enrollment form within 31 days of the loss of coverage.
