Each year St. John's University engages in a comprehensive benefit review and premium negotiation process for the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP). The primary goal is to provide students with a cost-effective health insurance program with quality benefits. After much review and analysis, the plan will continue with Aetna for the 2026-2027 policy year.

ELIGIBILITY

The following students who are actively attending classes are automatically charged for and enrolled in SHIP unless proof of coverage under another plan that meets or exceeds St. John's University's requirements is provided by submitting an online waiver form by the posted deadline.

  • All registered domestic undergraduate and graduate students residing IN University Housing
  • All Student Athletes

Internet classes and television (TV) courses do not fulfill the eligibility requirements that the covered student actively attends classes. Students taking only on-line classes are not eligible for school insurance. The University will determine eligibility based on your registration status.

Policy Period, Insurance Charge and Deadlines:

  Coverage Period Insurance Charge
Waiver/Enrollment Deadline
 Annual  08/15/26 - 08/14/27 Pending NY State Approval 09/18/2026
New Spring  01/01/27 - 08/14/27 Pending NY State Approval  02/05/2027

WAIVER PROCESS

Eligible students beginning classes in fall semester must complete the on-line waiver form on the left side of this page by the fall deadline.

New students beginning classes in spring semester must complete the on-line waiver form by the spring deadline. Eligible fall students who missed the fall deadline are NOT eligible to waive for spring.

Failure to complete the waiver form by the appropriate deadline will result in the student’s mandatory purchase of the SHIP . Waivers will not be accepted after the deadline.

Before waiving compare SHIP's cost, coverage and benefits to your existing plan and consider the following:

  1. Your plan must provide comprehensive coverage and access to doctors, specialists, hospitals, labs, pharmacies, and behavioral health providers in the St. John’s University campus area.
  2. The policy must be a U.S. health insurance plan that is filed and approved in the U.S. and ACA (Affordable Care Act) compliant.

  3. Out-of-state Medicaid and many out-of-state HMO or EPO plans do not provide out-of-network coverage. Urgent and/or emergency-only coverage does not provide comprehensive coverage in the area of the University.

ENROLLMENT PROCESS

Eligible resident domestic students living IN University housing and all Student Athletes are automatically charged for coverage at the time of registration and are automatically enrolled in SHIP.

Students who fail to complete the on-line waiver form by the posted deadline will remain enrolled for the full coverage period without the opportunity for a late waiver.

Re-enrollment after waiving: If you have a life changing event (i.e. involuntary loss of coverage) and need to enroll in the insurance plan after waiving, please refer to the "Qualifying Event Enrollment Form" in the navigation menu for eligiblity and enrollment process information. After reviewing the form, if you have any questions contact University Health Plans at 1-833-251-1134 or info@univhealthplans.com. Enrollment must occur within 30 days of the qualifying life event.

Optional Plans: Information about voluntary dental, vision and property insurance is available in the navigation menu on the left side of this page.

BENEFIT INFORMATION
