Health Insurance Requirement

All clinical students are required to maintain health insurance and must:

  1. Enroll in the annual Student Health Insurance Plan, or
  2. Submit a waiver form by the deadline showing they have comparable coverage that meets waiver requirements.

Students who do not take action by their deadline are automatically enrolled in the DMU student health insurance plan and are responsible for the insurance cost on their tuition statement.

Premium is charged by semester; students must meet eligibility each time the premium is charged. A new waiver or enrollment selection is required each academic year. An incoming PA student’s enrollment or waiver form is valid through the following spring (2027). All waivers are re‑verified at the start of the spring semester, and you may be asked to provide additional documentation to maintain waiver approval.

Waiver Requirments

Before waiving, confirm that your plan meets all requirements below:
  • Your plan must be filed and approved in the United States and fully compliant with the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA).
  • Students studying on campus: Your plan must provide non-emergency benefits in the campus area.
  • Students in clinical rotations: Your plan must provide national coverage. Local HMO and Medicaid plans are not accepted.
Important Notes:
  • The following plans also do not qualify:
    • Short-term medical plans
    • Limited benefit medical plans
    • Health sharing plans
    • Travel plans
    • Plans from foreign health care systems
    • Plans marketed to international students

Waiver submissions will be reviewed for compliance each semester.

Enrollment Process

Your Aetna enrollment is activated only after you submit the enrollment form or after your deadline passes. If you plan to enroll in the DMU student health insurance plan, complete the enrollment form to confirm your coverage and access your Aetna ID card.

Qualifying Event Enrollment Process

Students who waived the DMU student health insurance plan may qualify for special enrollment rights if they experience an involuntary loss of other coverage. Select the qualifying event enrollment form on the left for more information.

Premium Refund Policy

You are not eligible to enroll in the student health plan if you have Medicare at the time of enrollment in this student plan. The plan does not cover people with Medicare.

Withdrawal from ClassesLeave of Absence If you withdraw from classes under a school-approved leave of absence, your coverage will remain in force through the end of the period for which payment has been received and no premiums will be refunded.

Withdrawal from Classes – Other than Leave of Absence If you withdraw from classes other than under a school-approved leave of absence within 31 days after the policy effective date, you will be considered ineligible for coverage, your coverage will be terminated retroactively and any premiums collected will be refunded. If the withdrawal is more than 31 days after the policy effective date, your coverage will remain in force through the end of the period for which payment has been received and no premiums will be refunded. If you withdraw from classes to enter the armed forces of any country, coverage will terminate as of the effective date of such entry and a pro rata refund of premiums will be made if you submit a written request within 90 days of withdrawal from classes.
