University of Massachusetts - Dartmouth
Student Health Insurance Plan
2025-2026 Policy Year Waiver Form
All full-time and three-quarter time graduate and undergraduate students must either waive or enroll in the UMassD Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) at the beginning of each academic year.
The following students who are taking at least one class on campus are eligible and must either waive or enroll:
- Matriculating undergraduate students enrolled in 9 or more credits
- Matriculating graduate students enrolled in 7 or more credits (Matriculating graduate students taking 6 credits are not automatically enrolled but may contact the Bursar’s Office if interested in enrolling in SHIP).
- Matriculating School of Law students enrolled in 9 or more credits
- All matriculating international students regardless of credit hours will be enrolled in the Student Health Insurance Plan.
Part-time study, independent study, internet classes and television (TV) courses may not fulfill the eligibility requirements that the covered student actively attends classes. Students taking only on-line classes are not eligible for school insurance.
UMassD will bill and enroll students by semester based on eligibility. A waiver form completed in the fall semester will be automatically applied to your student account for the spring semester of the same school year. No additional action is necessary in the spring.
Eligible fall students who miss the fall waiver deadline will not have access to the spring waiver form and will be responsible for the fall and spring insurance charge. There will be NO EXCEPTIONS after the deadline.
This is the only way to request the removal of the 2025-2026 UMassD SHIP charge from a student's account. Submitting a copy of your insurance ID card through the Health Services Portal does not satisfy the requirement to waive the SHIP.
Your health insurance plan must meet the below requirements to waive the Student Health Insurance Plan:
- Be a US health insurance plan that is filed and approved in the US. Travel insurance and short-term limited duration plans are not accepted
- Provide coverage for the entire policy period with no break in coverage.
- Comply with the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and provide minimum essential coverage as defined by the ACA including:
- Provide an unlimited policy maximum
- Include coverage for pre-existing conditions
- Provide emergency and non-emergency care in the area of the University
